Fungi: The Future of Climate Change?

Nicole Assante HST 401 Professor John Horgan 1 st May 2024 Fungi: The Future of Climate Change?               Scattered on the forest floor, residing on decaying trees, connecting our forests, a quiet organism is at work: fungi. While inconspicuous in appearance, fungi are far more complex than meet the eye. Fungi can heal, decompose, and connect life.               The kingdom fungi is home to nearly 144,000 species of mushrooms, yeasts, molds, smuts and more. All these species lack chlorophyll, the pigment necessary for photosynthesis. This characteristic makes them heterotrophic. Heterotrophs, like humans, source energy from external sources. Fungi are decomposers, meaning that they get their energy from breaking down organic material.               But why is this important? T...

Unraveling Misdiagnosis and Underdiagnosis in Women’s Healthcare

Unraveling Misdiagnosis and Underdiagnosis in Women’s Healthcare Katherine Monico The United States healthcare system has failed half of its population. Women’s healthcare has been neglected since the standardization of medicine due to gender bias in medical research and healthcare providers. This paper will encompass the background of this problem, contributing factors to why women are continuously mis-and underdiagnosed, the consequences of these diagnoses, and solutions for the healthcare system. The woeful neglect of women’s healthcare is a multifaceted issue that is rooted in historical, societal, and systemic factors. Despite progress, disparities continue to persist in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of health conditions affecting women. Understanding the Problem The exploration of the standardization of medicine reveals why women are treated so poorly in their healthcare. In 1965, fewer than 10% of medical students were women [1] . Women were the minority in a male-d...

Robert F Kennedy Jr. vs himself: Do his conspiracies cancel out his environmental achievements and promises?

Joseph Cabornero Professor John Horgan HST 401-A 1 May 2024 Robert F Kennedy Jr. vs Himself: Do his conspiracies cancel out his environmental achievements and promises? America has been dealing with a difficult dichotomy since the road up to the 2016 election. This decision has been choosing between Trump and whatever weak politician the Democratic party is pushing for. For many Americans, it’s been described as trying to choose the lesser of two evils. While politicians like Bernie Sanders attempt to run for president, after not getting support from their political party, they completely drop out of the race. This is not the case for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.  While originally running as a Democrat, he is now running as an independent candidate with complete disregard for Joe Biden’s candidacy. For many voters like me who are sick of this dichotomy of the 2-party system and don’t want this election to be a repeat of 2020, we wonder if RFK Jr. is worth voting for and if he can g...
